Hurricane Florence Update #4 November 11,2018 Dear Shoals Club member, We wanted to provide a quick update on post-storm repairs and upcoming hours of operation at the Shoals Club. Construction crews continue to make great strides at the club. The roofing crew started laying new roof on Tuesday, November 6 and is moving at a good pace. We anticipate the completion of all roofing within the next 7-10 days. Interior construction is also moving along well, with most drywall work complete. We have faced some materials availability issues due to the massive amount of work taking place in our area. We do not have an anticipated completion date for interior work as some of it cannot start until the roofing is completed. Due to the ongoing construction projects, the Shoals Club will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and we will allow our staff to spend the day with their families. Thanksgiving dining options are available through the Maritime Market, Bald Head Island Club and MoJo’s on the Harbor. Please note, we will be adjusting our hours of operation beginning the week of November 12 as follows: Week of 11/12: Pool: Thurs-Sat 9 am-5 pm Sandbar Grille: Thurs-Sat 11 am-6 pm Beach Access: Thurs-Sat 10 am-4 pm Week of 11/19: Closed Thanksgiving Day Pool: Fri-Sat 9 am-5 pm Sandbar Grille: Fri-Sat 11 am-6 pm Beach Access: Fri-Sat 10 am-4 pm Week of 11/26: Pool: Thurs-Sat 9 am-4 pm Sandbar Grille: Thurs-Sat 11 am-4 pm Beach Access: Thurs-Sat 10 am-3 pm Please remember that the Shoals Club grounds are completely closed outside of our operating hours at this time. This includes access to the beach boardwalk, decks and parking lots. This is for everyone’s safety and the benefit of our work crews. The Shoals Club will be closed for the season after Saturday, December 1. We are hoping to schedule a holiday gathering in December, dependent on the completion of projects and space availability. We will send an update once we are able to make a definitive decision. We appreciate the cooperation and support we have received from our members with the ongoing construction. If you are on the island during our operating hours, please come take a swim (the water was 82 degrees this week!), try Chef Caitlyn’s fabulous fall menu at Sandbar Grille, and stop by to say hi to the staff. As always, please feel free to contact me at fwalls@bhisland.com if you have any questions or concerns. Best regards, F.E. "Woody" Walls Shoals Club General Manager Hurricane Florence Update #3 October 25, 2018 Dear Shoals Club member, We’re pleased to announce the Shoals Club will re-open select areas tomorrow, Friday, October 26, to Full Members and Annual Pass holders ONLY. Following are the areas and hours of operation: - Pool: This Friday and Saturday 9 am-6 pm, then Wednesdays-Saturdays 9 am-6 pm
- Beach Access: This Friday and Saturday 10 am-6 pm, then Wednesdays-Saturdays 10 am-6 pm
- Sandbar Grille: This Friday and Saturday 11 am-7 pm, then Wednesdays-Saturdays 11 am-7 pm
Please note, there will be signs directing pedestrian traffic and parking will be in the upper lot only (nearest East Beach). We ask that you please follow all posted signs as they are there for everyone's safety, and the property remains an active construction site. Also, we ask that you remember to bring your membership cards as they will be required to be presented for access. There will be no entry allowed to any sections of the Club that are not open for business (this includes no access at all on Sundays-Tuesdays) for any reason. For your safety, please do not wander and attempt to gain access to closed areas. Storm repair progress at the Shoals Club continues at a steady pace. All demolition work has been completed and repairs have begun in the lower level areas. Crews are focusing on lower level areas (offices, locker rooms, fitness room) first and will then move on to the Sandbar Pavilion and AQUA repairs once roofing is finished. Our roofing contractor will be mobilizing equipment and crews on Monday of next week and demolition will begin in earnest on Tuesday on the main building. It will be especially critical for members to pay close attention to all signage once roof repair is underway and avoid areas that are restricted. We expect roofing repair work to continue for approximately three weeks. As of today, the Shoals Club’s administrative functions have been moved back to the Club from the mainland into temporary quarters. We ask that you continue to email Connie Moore at cmoore@bhisland.com regarding membership questions and Sandy Walker at sawalker@bhisland.com regarding billing questions or call 910-454-4888, rather than coming to the Club for administrative needs. One final note, we do not currently have a timeline of how long we will remain open under our temporary approval from the Brunswick County Health Department, but we will continue to update you based on a change in safety, weather or other factors. We appreciate your patience and continued support. As always, please feel free to contact me at fwalls@bhisland.com if you have any questions or concerns. Best regards, F.E. Hurricane Florence Update #2 October 15,2018 Dear Shoals Club Member We wanted to provide an update on the status of repairs at the Shoals Club following Hurricane Florence and an estimate of our anticipated re-opening date for certain sections of the club. Flood and casualty insurance adjusters have been on property over the course of the last two weeks assessing damage. Repairs at the Shoals Club that have just occurred, are currently underway or slated to occur in the near term include: Complete tear out of all carpet and drywall in all lower level offices, locker rooms, storage areas and fitness room (completed as of Saturday) - Complete tear out of the ceiling in the Sandbar Pavilion (starting today)
- Draining and pressure washing of both pools, to include acid wash to address staining from vegetative debris, and change out of all filter systems to ensure no microbes remain from storm water (to be completed by end of the week)
- Replacement of the roof on the main building and the Sandbar Pavilion (commencing as soon as we have approval from our insurance carriers, which we anticipate will occur this week)
- Replacement of all lighting in AQUA and back dining room ceiling repairs (to occur once the roof is complete on the main building)
- Replacement of all fitness equipment, flooring and mirrors due to water damage
Shoals Club management and staff are anxious to provide member access and service in the near term, with the target of re-opening the pool and Sandbar Grille by mid to late next week. Look for a communication later this week on hours of operation, as well as an updated menu. Please note that we will not have showers and locker rooms available for members’ use, but we will have bathrooms available at the Sandbar Grille. Additionally, we anticipate opening the beach access at the same time the pool and Sandbar Grille open. We have had a few inquiries from members regarding dues payments and credits. Shoals Club dues are billed on an annual basis, with members having the option to pay via 12 interest-free payments over the course of the year. While the effects of Hurricane Florence were not in our control, we are working diligently to reopen available areas of the club as soon as possible. At this time no credit will be applied for dues paid during the club's necessary closure. We will continue to send updates as we have pertinent information to share and appreciate your consideration as we navigate through these multiple issues and work to get the Shoals Club back to full operation. Please let me know if I can further address any questions or concerns by emailing me at fwalls@bhisland.com. Best regards, F.E. "Woody" Walls Shoals Club General Manager -
Hurricane Florence Update #1 October 3,2018 Dear Shoals Club Member, We wanted to provide Shoals Club members with a brief overview of Hurricane Florence’s impact on club facilities and our near-term operational plans going forward. Considering the Shoals Club’s oceanfront location, the club grounds and facilities fared relatively well during the storm. We had no salt water intrusion of the club grounds. We did, however, experience fresh water intrusion in the pools, fitness room and locker rooms following several days of continuous rain. Our lower level administrative offices also experienced fresh water intrusion. Additionally, damage to the Shoals Club roof resulted in rainwater entering a portion of the back dining room. Looking ahead, repairs to the Shoals Club will include a new roof for the main clubhouse, ceiling replacement in a portion of the back dining room, and addressing the damage caused by rainwater runoff to the locker rooms, fitness rooms and offices. We’ll be meeting with insurance adjusters and contractors over the coming days to formally assess and schedule all needed work. Due to the time-consuming nature of the repairs, we anticipate the Shoals Club being closed for the foreseeable future. In the interim, we’ve set up a remote office on the Southport mainland to handle member accounts and club business. For general member inquiries please contact Connie Moore at cmoore@bhisland.com and for accounting-related questions please contact Sandy Walker at sawalker@bhisland.com. While Hurricane Florence has necessitated a brief delay in the Bald Head Island Club’s acquisition of the Shoals Club, it is still the intent of both parties to move forward with the acquisition. Please know that Shoals Club management and staff are anxious to welcome back members as soon as the repairs to the club’s facilities are completed and we can provide a safe and positive guest experience. As repair work progresses, we will share updates with you, including an estimated re-opening date. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience and support as we put Hurricane Florence behind us. Please let me know if I can further address any questions or concerns by emailing me at fwalls@bhisland.com. Best regards, F.E.
